As We Forgive

Could you forgive a person who murdered your family? This is the question faced by the subjects of this documentary about two Rwandan women coming face-to-face with the men who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide. The subjects of As We Forgive speak for a nation still wracked by the grief of a genocide that killed one in eight Rwandans. Overwhelmed by an enormous backlog of court cases, the government has returned over 50,000 genocide perpetrators back to the very communities they helped to destroy. Without the hope of full justice, Rwanda has turned to a new solution: Reconciliation.

But can it be done? Can survivors truly forgive the killers who destroyed their families? Can the government expect this from its people? And can the church, which failed at moral leadership during the genocide, fit into the process of reconciliation today? Gold Winner, Student Academy Awards, Best Documentary. A Force More Powerful
A three-hour, two-part documentary series reveals one of the 20th century's most important but least understood stories how millions chose to battle the forces of brutality and oppression with nonviolent weapons and won. With archival footage and interviews with witnesses and survivors, Force tells six stories of successful nonviolent movements which used strikes, slowdowns, boycotts and massive demonstrations to topple dictators, foil military invaders, establish democracy and win human rights. Here are the heroes, some known, some unsung, who changed the course of the 20th century. Their power flowed not from the barrel of a gun but from discipline and from shrewd tactical planning. Tracing how the movements inspired, borrowed from and built on each other, the series begins in 1907 with a young Mohandas Gandhi, the most influential leader in the history of nonviolent resistance, as he rouses his fellow Indians living in South Africa in a nonviolent struggle against racial oppression. Part One chronicles how Gandhi refines and expands the nonviolent weaponry he discovered in South Africa as he leads India's campaign for full independence from Britain in the 1930s. It also reveals a new angle on the American civil rights movement in 1960, then returns full circle to South Africa, this time in the 1980s as activists help dismantle the apartheid system. Part Two recounts how Danish citizens resist the Nazi Occupation, how striking Poland ship workers band together in Solidarity to fight communism head-on in 1980, and concludes in 1988 Chile where seven million citizens overcome their fears about the power of dictator Augusto Pinochet and participate in a special election which throws him out of office. Through interviews with nuclear scientists, politicians, authors, statesmen, and atomic bomb survivors, "The Forgotten Bomb" examines what The Bomb means to us all, and why we need to think about it again, now, even though the Cold War is long over. The Minute Man
A citizens' patrol group in Arizona is vowing to do what their government won't -- close down the Mexico border. But that's worrying many who see them as racist vigilantes.

Every year, over a million illegal immigrants try to cross the US/Mexican border. Hundreds die in the attempt. "People migrate because of sheer economic desperation," explains public defender Isabel Garcia. "It's not something that they take lightly." But the minutemen of Arizona have no sympathy. "We have out of control immigration," states Chris Simcox, co-founder of the group. He organizes patrols of volunteers to hunt down migrants. The minutemen have proved so successful, they're planning to expand to other counties. But with the US economy dependent on undocumented labor, the government is unlikely to heed their call to stop all immigration. To view the film click here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkXjMvUy5ak

Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth
The story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status.

There are approximately 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. and raised in this country. These are young people who were educated in American schools, hold American values, know only the U.S. as home and who, upon high school graduation, find the door to their future slammed shut.

65,000 undocumented students graduate every year from high school without "papers." It is against the law for them to work or drive. It is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. They live at risk of arrest, detention and deportation to countries they may not even remember. Currently, there is no path to citizenship for these young people. To view a trailer for the film, click here: Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth"

Waiting for Superman
A deeply personal exploration of the current state of public education in the U.S. and how it is affecting our children. The film probes the lives of five kids whose dreams, hopes and untapped potential reveal all that is at stake at this critical moment.

They include Daisy, an L.A. fifth grader who, no matter what, never gives up on big plans for her future; Francisco, a Bronx first-grader whose mom will do anything to give him a shot at a better life; Anthony, a Washington DC fifth-grader in search of a different life from that of the dad he lost to drug addiction; Emily, an eighth-grader in Silicon Valley who fears being permanently unfit for college; and Bianca, a Harlem, kindergartner already aiming, with her single mother's help, to make it against the odds.

In spite of their rousing determination and grit, the shocking reality is that most of the film's touching and funny cast of kids will be barred from a chance at what was once taken for granted: a great American education.

Presented by Davis Guggenheim, the Academy Awarding winning director of Inconvenient Truth.  To see a trailer of the film, click here: www.waitingforsuperman.com/

The White Rose consisted of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor that became known for an anonymous leaflet campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, that called for active opposition to dictator Adolf Hitler's regime. The six core members of the group were arrested by the Gestapo and executed.
