Immigrant Detention Center Vigils
Every Friday, 7:15 AM, 1930 Beach St., Broadview, IL Join the Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition, Sisters of Mercy, Brothers and Sisters of Immigrants, and other members of the religious community in a prayer vigil at Broadview Immigration Detention and Processing Center to support those who are in Immigration Detention, their families and be a public witness to the injustices of our broken immigration system. Afghanistan and Beyond: America's Path to Permanent War
On Thursday, August 19th at 7:00pm, Andrew Bacevich, award-winning author and professor of international relations at Boston University, along with Jerome McDonnell, host of WBEZ's Worldview, with will be at the Chicago Temple, 77 W Washington St in Chicago (across from Daley Plaza). The event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the North Suburban Peace Initiative.

Andrew Bacevich is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and author of the critically acclaimed books, The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War and The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism. In his forthcoming work, Washington Rules: America's Path To Permanent War, Bacevich argues that the same military policy that has dominated American thinking for fifty years - a permanent armed presence straddling the globe, prepared to intervene anywhere - continues in the Obama administration.

Andrew Bacevich's writing has appeared in Foreign Affairs, The Atlantic Monthly, The Nation, The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. He has also appeared on PBS' Bill Moyers Journal and NPR radio. He is the recipient of a Lannan Award and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.



Back to School Sunrise Prayer Service
On Saturday, August 21 there will be a Sunrise Mass for Non-Violence in our Hearts, Family, School, Streets at 12th Street Beach & Lake Shore Drive, just south of the Adler Planetarium on Northerly Island (formerly the site of Meigs Field).



40th Anniversary CCHD Grant Awards

September 12, 2010. The DREAM Gala Committee of the Coalition of Latino Students invites members of the community to participate in the 14th Annual Chicago Half Marathon and 5k run. Run/Walk for Refugees
On Saturday, September 11, Exodus World Services will sponsor a 5K race and 3K walk through historic Long Grove (follow signs from the intersection of Rts. 83 and 53). Registration is from 6:30 - 8:00 am and the event starts 8:30 am. This annual event to help refugees from Bhutan, Burma, Iraq and other countries. T-shirts, goody bags and free pancake breakfast for all participants. Raise $500 or more and receive a free handcrafted thank you gift made by a refugee artisan. Multi-Parish Peace & Justice Meeting
Tuesday, September 21 at St. Francis Xavier parish will host members of the neighboring parishes to discuss peace & justice issues and activities in the area.



A Million Minutes for Peace.

Archdiocese of Chicago Justice Day 2010
Saturday, October 2, at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3121 W. Jackson Blvd. A day of Catholic Social Teaching based on Pope Benedict XVI's latest encyclical Caritas in Veritate - Charity in Truth. The guest speaker will be Paul D. Simoneau Lt Col USMC (Ret.), Director of the Office of Justice and Peace in the Diocese of Knoxville. 2010 Chicago CCHD grantees will be there to share what hey are doing to make a difference in people's lives. AIDS Run/Walk
Saturday, October 2 in Grant Park. 100% of the funds (including all registration fees and sponsorships) are returned to Catholic Charities in Lake and Cook Counties. The direct beneficiaries of this event are nearly 300 clients of the HIV/AIDS Case Management Programs, as well as our HIV/AIDS Ministry. The Tenth Annual Africa Summit
Saturday, October 16 at the Cardinal Meyer Center, 3525 S. Lake Park Avenue, 9 am-3 pm. Sponsored by the Office for Peace and Justice. The focus this year is Food Security and Conflict. Speakers include: Bruce White, CRS Food Security Policy Advisor and Dan Griffin, who will speak about the conflict in Sudan. The Africa Summit brings people together to educate and discuss how U.S. policy affects the lives of the people of Africa. We will also sell fair trade goods from Africa and Haiti. The cost of the day is $20.00 and includes materials and lunch.



Bread for the Journey: Becoming a Community of Hope
On Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11am - 2pm, Pax Christi Illinois is sponsoring a Peace Mass, Public Witness and Community Potluck at St. Gertrude Parish Social Center, 1429 W. Granville Ave. Chicago. Fr. Pat Brennan will be presiding.






Fr. Dan Groody CSC
Tuesday, Oct. 21, 7:30-9:00pm at St. Nicholas parish in Evanston. Fr. Groody is an Assistant Professor of Theology and the Director of the Center for Latino Spirituality and Culture at the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He spent many years working in Latin America, particularly along the U.S.- Mexican Border, and is the author and editor of various books and articles, including Border of Death, Valley of Life: An Immigrant Journey of Heart and Spirit (2002); Globalization, Spirituality and Justice: Navigating the Path to Peace (2007); The Option for the Poor in Christian Theology (2007), and A Promised Land, A Perilous Journey: Theological Perspectives on Migration (2007). He is also the executive producer of various films and documentaries, including Strangers No Longer (produced for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) and Dying to Live: A Migrant's Journey, which has been accepted into various international film festivals, won national awards, and has aired on PBS.
