Dear Friends of Peace & Justice,

Last month was particularly busy one for us – there was the Family Promise program at St. Francis, the annual Catholic Relief Services Midwest Region meeting which included a vigil at the Broadview Immigrant Detention Center, the national Pax Christi Conference and the film Countdown to Zero!

In this latest Update, there are a few items would like to point out: new events listed on the Calendar tab; a report on Homeless Youth in America; lots of new movie clips under the Resources tab and new organizations listed under the Resources and Links tabs.

As always please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

We hope all's well with you!

Mary & Vic

Family Promise
For two weeks last month, St. Francis became the first Catholic parish in Illinois to host homeless families in the Family Promise program. Close to 100 volunteers from the community helped load and unload vans, set up furniture, prepare and serve dinners, pack lunches, make breakfast & sleep overnight with our guests. Others contributed their talents or made financial contributions.

Thank you for all your help!

Iraqi Student Project (ISP)
This fall, close to 40 students from Iraq will be in the United States working to graduate and take their education back to help in the rebuilding of their country. These students are able to do this due to the tremendous generosity of partner colleges and universities that have waived their tuition.

Another source of support comes from many individuals who provide approximately $13,000 each year, per student, to help pay for their other expenses such as books, health care, meals, housing and personal expenses.

One of the students attends DePaul University and is supported by the ISP DePaul Support Group. If you are interested in making a donation to support this program, checks may be made payable to the Iraqi Student Project and mailed to: Elizabeth Mertic, 708 Dodge Ave., Evanston, IL 60202. You can also donate by credit card at www.iraqidepaul.org. To contribute, click here.

The ISP is also selling a new 60 page hard covered book of poetry called The River, The Roof, The Palm Tree: Young Refugees from Iraq Remember Their Home. The book is written by the students themselves and is divided to 6 sections: The Thinking of Iraq, The Palm Tree, Sleeping on the Roof, Odes to Books, Salaam, Rites and Prayers.
